The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Principal Bench, New Delhi, has taken up Original Application No. 606/2025 based on a letter-petition filed by Mr. Jitender, a resident of Village Jaffarpur Kalan, New Delhi.

The application highlights serious concerns regarding pollution and encroachment in a Johad/pond located in Khasra No. 896, Village Jaffarpur Kalan. The applicant alleged that the pond is being used for disposal of dirty sewage, garbage, and mud, and has been subjected to encroachment by private persons. The applicant further claimed that the polluted water of the pond has become a health hazard, causing diseases such as malaria, cancer, asthma, and skin infections among residents, especially children. He also complained of foul smell making the locality uninhabitable. Taking note of the environmental issues involved, the NGT observed that the case raises substantial questions relating to compliance with environmental norms. The Tribunal has impleaded the Member Secretary, DPCC, and the Commissioner, MCD as respondents and directed the applicant to serve the respondents and file an affidavit of service at least one week before the next hearing. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on 25 February 2026.
