Community solar project By Amazon for bringing sustainable infrastructure to schools and underserved neighborhoods in Powai, Mumbai

Installs 50 solar-powered streetlights across three communities and solar panels in 17 municipal schools, benefiting over 5,000 students, teachers, and residents

Amazon today inaugurated a community solar energy project in Powai, Mumbai, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable infrastructure and community development in the region. The initiative, launched in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), encompasses two key components: the installation of 50 solar-powered streetlights across three underserved communities in Powai, and on-grid solar panels in 17 municipal schools. The project has been implemented in partnership with Nirmiti Foundation as the NGO partner and Green India Initiative (GIIPL) as the technology partner.

The inauguration was graced by Shashikant Memane, Executive Engineer, School Infrastructure Cell, BMC and Dr. Sachin Shigwan, Solar Man of India. Senior Amazon leaders Saji PK, Director of Data Center Operations for Asia Pacific, Japan and China at Amazon Web Services, and Aditya Chowdhry, Director of Infrastructure Operations, India at Amazon Web Services, attended the event.

Lighting Up Communities That Were Left in the Dark

The 50 solar streetlights have been installed across three remote and historically underserved communities in Powai — Bhangshil Gav, Ultanpada, and Indiranagar — areas that previously had no access to street lighting. The solar streetlights will benefit more than 1200 community members This initiative by Amazon addresses a critical safety and quality-of-life gap for residents, providing reliable, clean energy-powered illumination at no ongoing cost to the community.

Empowering the Next Generation Through Clean Energy in Schools

Complementing the community lighting initiative, 75 kW on-grid solar panels across 17 municipal schools in Powai will collectively benefit more than 5,000 students, teachers and community members. By integrating renewable energy into the school environment, the project not only helps to reduce the carbon footprint of these institutions but also serves as an example of sustainable practices for the next generation.

The initiative is part of Amazon’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and community investment in the Mumbai region, where the company continues to expand its infrastructure footprint. AWS operates two cloud data center Regions in India located in Mumbai and Hyderabad with plans to invest a total of $12.7 billion into cloud infrastructure in India by 2030.
