Community Volunteers Paint 35 Recycled-Plastic Benches to Brighten Navi Mumbai’s

An initiative by NMMC and NGO Project Mumbai, with Mindspace REIT as Sustainability Partner

The benches painted at the event were created by upcycling plastic waste collected from citizens across Navi Mumbai through the Recyclothon. With over 3 tonnes of plastic collected so far, a part of it has been converted into benches that will be placed in Municipal Schools turning waste into something practical, visible, and lasting. Plastic collected from citizens, transformed into recycled amenities, and returned to the community is a successful circular model.

The bench painting activity was hosted at Agro Belapur, a resident-run organic farm and butterfly garden maintained entirely by local volunteers. Set amidst rich green cover, the venue became a lively community space, with children, college students from SIES, youth, and senior citizens participating side by side, bringing colour and character to benches that will soon be used by school children. More than a painting drive, the activity fostered participation and shared ownership. Volunteers worked together to transform functional seating into a reminder of what citizens can achieve when they come together with a shared purpose, supporting responsible waste handling and cleaner neighbourhoods.

This bench painting event is one of several community-led activations planned under the year-long Plastic & E-Waste Recyclothon, which spans 200+ locations across Navi Mumbai and aims to engage nearly 2 lakh citizens.

As Sustainability Partner, Mindspace Business Parks REIT continues to support the Recyclothon through on-ground activities that turn intention into action, contributing to Navi Mumbai’s journey towards becoming a cleaner, more sustainable, and future-ready city.
