We strongly condemn the continued negligence of the JNU Administration in maintaining the university’s basic infrastructure.
Last night, a ceiling fan collapsed in a room at Tapti Hostel. Fortunately, no students were present at the time but this could easily have resulted in serious injury or death. In a meeting with JNUSU, Former ADoS had said that Tapti and Mahi Mandavi have been declared unfit for accommodation. Despite this, students are being allotted hostels without any maintanence. This is not an isolated incident. In the wake of the tragic Satya Niketan case, where poor infrastructure cost students their lives, it has become impossible to ignore the same warning signs here at JNU. For years, students have raised these concerns through protests, petitions, and hunger strikes, yet the Administration has failed to take meaningful corrective action.
The decay is visible across the campus – in classrooms, in hostels with leaking ceilings and crumbling walls, and even in spaces central to student life such as Teflas (JNUSU’s office). Despite repeated complaints, no serious repair or maintenance work has been undertaken. Alongwith this, we demand the structural audit of all hostels and buildings. We hold the JNU Administration responsible for this continued apathy and warn that further inaction risks a tragedy similar to the one that shook Satya Niketan. We appeal to all media houses to visit JNU and document the true state of its infrastructure, so that public attention and pressure can compel the Administration to act before another life is put at risk.
