We hope the PM releases a video removing Home Minister Amit Shah

Yesterday, the Prime Minister of the country, in another late-night message posted on Instagram, spoke about young people and their anger. He went on to say that he forgave the young women and expressed “cultural shock” over the language they used. However, he failed to mention even once in his entire video how his own government and police—both in uniform and in civilian clothes—treated women across the country.

Right from Delhi to many other places across the nation, women were subjected to groping, had lathis wielded against their private parts, and were manhandled by male police officers. They suffered broken skulls, fractured hands, and pellet wounds in their bodies, while facing FIRs, intimidation, and jail time—yet not a single word was spoken against these actions. If the Modi government was so particular about “forgiving” the students, why hasn’t Modi still held up on his promise of withdrawal of FIRs against students? Till date, many state governments are still not fulfilling this promise. Why hasn’t he spoken about punishing the police officers who, through police excesses, fired rubber bullets, pellets, and launched other attacks against them? Why has he remained silent?

This convenient erasure of police atrocities committed against students by the Modi government cannot be ignored. That is why the question of the Delhi Police Commissioner’s and the Home Minister’s resignations remains. The Prime Minister cannot run away from accountability, nor can the Home Minister. Who gave the order for pellet guns to be fired at students? Who gave the order for students to be so brutalized that many ended up in ICUs and critical care, with so many others severely injured? The real cultural shock for this country has been the indiscriminate and vehement usage of batons, pellets and even bullets against unarmed people protesting for their rights! It has been the shameful normalcy of trolling and doxxing dissenters and giving rape threats to women and gender minorities. All this done by the IT cell run with utmost precision by Amit Malviya. We hope the Prime Minister releases a video addressing this, saying, “I am taking accountability, and I am removing Home Minister Amit Shah.” AISA
