In a blatant display of intimidation and political violence, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) attacked All India Students’ Association (AISA) activists, including Comrade Aameen – who recently completed a grueling 23-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, at Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) today.
The incident occurred during the orientation program for the incoming batch of MA Political Science students. Following the departure of faculty members and during the distribution of refreshments, AISA activists gathered to extend a warm welcome to the freshers. It was after this Amit, a second-year MA Political Science student and Vice President of ABVP AUD, physically assaulted Aameen and other AISA members. Amit aggressively manhandled and pulled at Aameen, issuing direct threats of further physical harm if AISA continued its political engagement and activism within the MA Political Science department.
The response of campus security during the violence highlights a alarming breakdown of duty. Arriving significantly late to the scene, security personnel failed to de-escalate the attack or restrain the perpetrator. Instead of offering protection to the victims or registering a complaint against the attacker, security officials actively pressured AISA activists to stop video recording the assault and demanded that they vacate the premises immediately. Roll Back the Draconian Attendance and Restriction Against Public Gathering Notification On July 31, the AUD administration released two draconian notifications, one PhD Attendance-cum-Wherabouts Registry and two, requiring students to seek prior permission four days in advance for any gathering, march, or event on campus. This incident exposes the active nexus between the AUD Administration and the ABVP, wherein violence and institutional mandates are weaponized together to depoliticize university spaces and stifle democratic student movement.
Jigyasa, MA Education Councillor who was also man handled and threatened by Amit states –
“The assault on Aameen, who is physically recovering after a 23-day hunger strike for student rights, shows the complete moral and political bankruptcy of the Akhil Bharatiya ‘Violence’ Parishad. ABVP acts as the violent enforcement arm of the BJP and the university administration to enforce silence and push the saffronization of AUD. We will not be intimidated by physical threats, nor will we allow university spaces to be stripped of critical thought and democratic student politics.”
