The hostel election in Kaveri, which was scheduled to be held in February, was postponed after deliberate breach and undemocratic intervention by Hostel President Vaibhav Meena, ABVP leader and wardens of Kaveri Hostel. In JNU, democratic processes have been followed traditionally, and it has been the culture of JNU that each hostel conducts its own election to elect its president, hostel committee and mess committee. In this light, the warden of Kaveri hostel released a notification for the election in February.
Residents of the hostel elect the election committee to conduct the hostel election, and accordingly GBM ( general body meeting) was called which was chaired by Vaibhav Meena, Kaveri Hostel President. But Vaibhav Meena, an ABVP member, was incapable and incompetent during the election and was not able to conduct the GBM. When he was not able to elect the ABVP members in the election commission through democratic processes, he declared the ABVP members “elected” for the EC undemocratically, breaching the democratic norms established for hostel elections. This has been the attitude of the ABVP-ADMIN nexus towards election in campus. The similar instances had been orchestrated by the same ABVP in Kaveri Hostel election of 2025.
The undemocratic and dictatorial attitude of the hostel president was resisted by the Kaveri Residents. Following this, the warden intervened and postponed the scheduled election. The warden promised that the election would be rescheduled and conducted soon, since then months have passed, and now it’s August, but the Warden has not released any notification to conduct hostel elections.
Keeping alive the democratic culture of JNU, residents of Kaveri hostel demand immediate elections, which is their democratic right and necessary for uninterrupted governance and execution of student-related issues. We demand immediate notification for fresh elections by the warden and also appeal them to conduct elections free and fair, which is basic and necessary for any democratic elections.
